Winter Sailing at Crosswinds Boating Center
Myth: It's too cold to sail in the winter. Truth: Sailing in the winter is a fun for all ages!
Don't you hate to put away the boat at the end of the year? Especially if you’re not the one lucky person that won the last race. Then don't put it away - join our Lake Jordan Winter Series! We live in a relatively warm climate. Most of our winter days are well above freezing and with proper clothing and gear, winter sailing is warm, enjoyable and comfortable. In general, 9 out of 10 people enjoy sailing in the winter series and keep coming back. Winter sailing offers sailboat racers in central NC a place to casually race all winter. We sail at Crosswinds Boating Center, Lake Jordan, and get an eclectic mix of novice to experienced racers.
Participating in the Lake Jordan winter series is included in all skipper-level memberships and there is a short term Winter Membership available. Guest skippers are always welcome and may participate by paying $25 (cash only!) which waives the $15 ramp fee at Crosswinds Boating Center.
Winter racing runs from November through March. See the Events Calendar for racing dates. We ask that skippers sign-up beforehand on the Scratch Sheet. You may also sign-up to offer to crew. Competitors' meeting is at 12:00 pm with the first gun at 1:00 pm. A chili social follows the races. Our objective is to get in 5 races each day. The courses are different variations of short windward leeward courses - see the Winter Sailing Instructions. Be sure to check with the Race Committee boat if you don't know the course.
For ALL CONDITIONS, life jackets must be worn at all times by all participants. During the Winter Series, sailors under the age of 18 must wear a wetsuit or dry suit unless a parent/guardian is present to waive the requirement. The RC will provide a minimum of two functioning power boats on the course at all times. Cancellation guidelines are listed below.
CSC supports Sailors for the Sea in efforts to ensure our sailing families and communities are able to enjoy and conserve the beauty of our waters while raising awareness of human impact on the marine environment and wildlife. .

Winter Cancellation Guidelines
-- If the air temperature is below 45 degrees OR the average wind is over 12 knots, racing will probably be cancelled for all fleets except for adult sailors skippering self-rescuing boats - Fully self-rescuing boats include the Laser, Sunfish, Catalina 14, Vanguard 15, multihulls, 420, 470, and 505.
-- If the air temperature is below 32 degrees OR the average wind speed is over 16 knots, then all racing will be cancelled for all fleets.
-- The PRO may also cancel races on the shore on race day if there are fewer than 4 sailboats participating.
Note that these parameters are designed to ensure that RC will be able to handle all situations in an appropriate manner.
Note that these parameters are designed to ensure that RC will be able to handle all situations in an appropriate manner.
The weather is often unpredictable during this time of year, and cancellation is the decision of the PRO. If the predicted conditions are close to the parameters listed below, or otherwise uncertain, the PRO may elect to make a decision to cancel on the shore on race day. If the predicted conditions are entirely unfavorable, the PRO may make the decision to cancel before race day, and communicate the decision via email and the web. Multiple weather information sources are used in the decision making process.
Weather forecast and actual weather conditions are provided from the Crosswinds weather station on the water at Personal Weather Station Dashboard | Weather Underground (wunderground.com). This may help you in your decision to race.

Mast-Up Storage from Crosswinds Boating Center
A special deal for club members
You can leave your boat on your trailer near the ramp from the first winter race day in November to the last winter race day in March (the normal 3 month rate would be $355).
To keep your boat at Crosswinds Boating Center you must be a Carolina Sailing Club member and participate in the Carolina Sailing Club winter series. Only boats that are sailed in the series can be stored at Crosswinds Boating Center. This is NOT an offer for a cheap place to winter store your boat. Of course you’re welcome to use your boat anytime not just racing days, and of course you don't have to store here to participate in the series.
If you’re interested in general boat storage, arrange through Crosswinds. Everything else racing-related for winter racing will be through the Carolina Sailing Club.
The owners are pleased to offer this deal to encourage winter sailing on Lake Jordan.

access to a sailboat
To provide easy access to sailboat racing, the Carolina Sailing Foundation and Flying Scot Fleet 27 have arranged daily use of two Flying Scots at the Crosswinds Boating Center at Jordan Lake during our Winter Racing Series. The boats are setup by the ramps with mast-up, rigged with sails, ready to trailer launch in 10 minutes!
•Boat use is provided on a daily basis only for the Winter Racing Series days at Crosswinds at this time. The skipper must be a member of CSC or CSF. Request for other days can be discussed, case-by-case.
•The skipper must be able to setup, trailer launch, safely sail, dock, and put away a Flying Scot. Capability will be discussed and approved during the reservation request.
•Training & assistance is not directly offered. However, a Flying Scot fleet member may (but not obligated) to assist you and sail with you initially. CSF provides formal sailing training with an instructor in the spring and fall with "Tiller Time" offered on a Scot. Go to the Carolina Sailing Foundation site to learn more.
•Safety First! Per CSC winter rules, PFDs must be worn by all on the boat at all times, no matter the conditions. The Scot is not a self-rescuing boat so the temperature must be 45 or higher and the average wind conditions must be less than 12 knots. Four people maximum on the boat.
