The Coaching Series

If you are new to sailboat racing, or just want to improve your position in the fleet, we host a series of coaching days at both Lake Jordan and Kerr Lake.

The coaching begins at 10:30am on Saturdays on the same weekend as a Sunday Championship Racing day.

We start with shore school on a variety of topics - starts, race course definitions and types, tactics and strategy, boat trim for speed - followed by drills and practice on the water.

The coaching series is open to all, including non-members. We encourage those who don't race to come on out and try it out.

If you decide to join us for the coaching, please bring your boat. Or, if you don't have one, we will find you a ride on a member's boat so you can test out your newfound knowledge.

We look forward to seeing you at our coaching series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't have a boat and don't know anyone to sail with but would like to crew?

The best way to get started is by showing up to one of the coaching days or before 10:30am on a championship racing day and look for the race committee boats. They will still be on land and you'll be able to speak to someone on race committee. Tell them you want to sail but don't have a boat and would like to sail with someone if possible.

If you see a particular boat you want to crew on, don't hesitate to introduce yourself, ask questions about the boat, and quite likely, you may get an invitation to crew for the day. Coming to our monthly socials is also a good time to arrange a ride. We encourage you to try different types of boats and fleets to determine your preference.

What should I bring to the races?

You will want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, water, a snack or lunch, a life jacket, boat shoes or sailing boots, and foul weather gear (water-proof pants and jacket) if the weather is particularly cool or windy. Have a change of clothes back on shore in case you get wet.

Where can I find the most up to date information about race schedules and club activities?

Check out our calendar.

My kids are interested in learning to sail. Does the Carolina Sailing Club have any 'learn to sail' programs for kids?

The Carolina Sailing Club does not have sailing lessons, but if you go to the Carolina Sailing Foundation, you will see that they run sailing camps during the summer for kids 9 and up.

Do you offer sailing instruction for adults?

Once again, check out the Carolina Sailing Foundation to learn more about adult sailing classes.
